The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Miami Hurricanes meet Thursday in the college football Independence Bowl at Independence Stadium.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have a chance at their first ever double-digit winning season and their sixth straight bowl victory. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have split their last six non-home games. J'Mar Smith is completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 2,814 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. Smith has seven touchdown passes in his last three games. Malik Stanley and Adrian Hardy have combined for 1,099 receiving yards and four touchdowns while Griffin Hebert has 28 receptions. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs ground game is averaging 167.9 yards per contest, and Justin Henderson leads the way with 967 yards and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, Louisiana Tech is allowing 23.7 points and 390.3 yards per game. L'Jarius Sneed leads the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs with 72 tackles, Milton Williams has four sacks and Amik Robertson has five interceptions.
The Miami Hurricanes look to finish with a winning record and win their second bowl game since the 2007 season. The Miami Hurricanes have lost four of their last six non-home games. Jarren Williams is completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 2,093 yards, 19 touchdowns and six interceptions. Williams and N'Kosi Perry have combined for 27 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. Brevin Jordan and K.J. Osborn have combined for 986 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while Mike Harley has 38 receptions. The Miami Hurricanes ground game is averaging 121.7 yards per contest, and DeeJay Dallas leads the way with 693 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, Miami is allowing 20.8 points and 307.6 yards per game. Shaquille Quarterman leads the Miami Hurricanes with 96 tackles, Gregory Rousseau has 14 sacks and DJ Ivey has three interceptions.
The Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 bowl games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Hurricanes are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite, 2-9 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 bowl games. The under is 15-7 in Bulldogs last 22 games overall. The over is 3-0-1 in Hurricanes last 4 games as a favorite.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have a chance to make history with their first double-digit winning season ever and have won their last five bowl games in each of the last five years. The Miami Hurricanes have been up and down all year and ended the season with disappointing losses to FIU and Duke. You have to question just how motivated Miami will be for this game and we can't ignore that Shreveport is about 70 miles from Ruston, so Louisiana Tech should be well represented for this game. There's a lot of reasons to consider the Bulldogs and the points, but then you look at their soft schedule and start to question just how good La Tech really is. The Miami Hurricanes also have a clear advantage in terms of athletes and that speed on the outside on both sides of the ball can be why the smaller schools get crushed. I'll lay the touchdown with the Canes.
