The Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Virginia Tech Hokies will match up on the college football circuit Saturday.
Wake Forest rolls in at 7-1 so far this year. The Deacons fell to Louisville in their sixth game but otherwise have beaten Utah State, Rice, UNC, Elon, Boston College, Florida State and NC State.
In the win over NC State, Wake QB Jamie Newman tossed for 287 yards and three scores, while Kenneth Walker led the rush on 56 yards. Kendall Hinton had 93 yards on six catches there as well.
Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’re 5-3 so far. The Hokies have wins over ODU, Furman, Miami-FL, Rhode Island and UNC but they’ve fallen to Boston College, Duke and Notre Dame.
In the loss to the Irish, Virginia Tech QB Quincy Patterson had 139 yards with one TD and one INT, and also led the rush on 77 yards. Damon Hazelton added 63 yards and a score on five grabs.
The Deacons are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five road games and 5-2 ATS versus a team with a winning record. Wake is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 in November and the under is 6-0 in their last six after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Hokies are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 conference games and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 on grass. Virginia Tech is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 after a straight-up loss and 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
Wake seems to be getting back on track after a close win (22-20) over Florida State and the previous 62-59 loss to Louisville. The Deacons didn’t have much trouble with NC State, cruising 44-10.
Virginia Tech could give the Deacons some trouble, however. They’re scoring pretty well over their last four games and took Notre Dame to the wire 21-20. I like the Hokies to hang around here and cover.
