The Line: South Alabama Jaguars +27.5 -- Over/Under: 53
The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the South Alabama Jaguars meet in a week 9 Sun Belt conference college football tilt from Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will look for another road win to build on their 6-0 record following a 52-7 beatdown of ULM in their last outing. Zac Thomas threw for 214 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception on 18 of 30 passing while Jacob Huesman threw a 56-yard touchdown pass as well. Darrynton Evans led App State in rushing with 136 rushing yards and a touchdown while Marcus Williams Jr. had 79 rushing yards with a score and the aforementioned Thomas added 58 rushing yards and a TD. Corey Xavier Sutton led App State’s receiving group with 5 catches for 75 yards while Jalen Virgil added a touchdown grab. The previously mentioned Evans added a touchdown reception as did Collin Reed and Thomas Hennigan, Defensively, Noel Cook led the Mountaineers with 8 total tackles while Jordan Fehr and Shaun Jolly each had an interception. As a team, Appalachian State is averaging 438.7 yards of total offense and 42.8 points per game while allowing 357.8 yards of total defense and 21.7 points per game against this season.
The South Alabama Jaguars need a win to snap a five game losing streak after a 37-13 loss to Troy in their last outing. Cephus Johnson threw for 183 yards and 2 interceptions on 20 of 38 passing while Tra Minter led the Jaguars in rushing with 86 rushing yards and Kawaan Baker had a rushing TD as well. Jalen Tolbert led the Jaguars with 48 receiving yards while Baker had 42 receiving yards with 5 catches and Minter added a team-high 6 catches for 36 yards. Defensively, Riley Cole led the Jaguars with 11 total tackles while Kelvin Johnson had 10 total tackles with a team-high 5 solo tackles and Travis Reed had a pair of interceptions for South Alabama in the loss. As a team, South Alabama is averaging 312.6 yards of total offense and 16.3 points per game while allowing 405 yards of total defense and 30.4 points per game against this season.
Appalachian State is 18-5 ATS in their last 23 games overall and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games. South Alabama is 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games against a team with a winning record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 conference games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall.
I’d like to give South Alabama a chance here, but the fact is that the Jaguars have been relatively ineffective for the last month or so, failing to break 17 points in five straight games while allowing 30 or more points in four of their last five. Asking App State to cover this kind of thick line on the road may feel like asking a lot, but the Mountaineers are averaging three more touchdowns than their opposition this season and have given up just 7 points in back-to-back games so I’d lay the points with the Mountaineers of Appalachian State in this one.
