The Utah State Aggies and the Air Force Falcons meet in a week 9 Mountain West conference college football matchup from Falcon Stadium on Saturday night.
The Utah State Aggies come into this one looking to build on a 36-10 win over Nevada in their last outing. Jordan Love threw for 169 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 13 of 31 passing while Gerold Bright led the Aggies in rushing with 126 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jaylen Warren added 73 rushing yards of his own while Siaosi Mariner had a pair of grabs for 53 receiving yards and Deven Thompkins had 4 catches for 46 yards. Caleb Repp added a receiving score for the Aggies in the win. Defensively, David Woodward led the Aggies with 11 total tackles including 6 solo tackles while Andre Grayson had 9 total tackles with a team-high 8 solo tackles. Shaq Bond and Kevin Meitzenheimer each had an interception as well in the victory. As a team, Utah State is averaging 453.3 yards of total offense and 32.7 points per game while allowing 406.2 yards of total defense and 23 points per game against this season.
The Air Force Falcons will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 56-26 beatdown of Hawaii in their last outing. Mike Schmidt threw for 147 yards and a touchdown on 5 of 6 passing while also leading the Falcons in rushing with 120 yards and 3 touchdowns. Timothy Jackson had 113 rushing yards and a TD while Kadin Remsberg had 91 rushing yards and 2 TDs and Geraud Sanders had a team-high 3 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Demonte Meeks led the Falcons with 8 total tackles including a team-high 7 solo tackles as well as a pair of sacks while Milton Bugg III had a 92-yard pick-six for the Falcons. As a team, Air Force is averaging 439.6 yards of total offense and 37.4 points per game while allowing 335.7 yards of total defense and 24 points per game against this season.
Utah State is 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games following a win. Air Force is 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 conference games and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 home games against a team with a winning road record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I’m tempted by Utah State and a free field goal, but the issue I have is that Air Force and that option offense is really good and the defense is doing their job as well. Air Force has also won their two conference games at home by an average of 18 points per game. Granted, Utah State will be the toughest task for the Falcons at home to date, but I think that Air Force will be up to the challenge and win this one by a touchdown, covering in the process and handing the Aggies their first conference defeat of the season.
