The UTEP Miners and the FIU Panthers meet in a week 8 C-USA college football matchup from Riccardo Silva Stadium on Saturday night.
The UTEP Miners will be out to snap a four game losing streak after a 26-16 loss to UTSA in their last outing before their recent bye week. Brandon Jones has thrown for 594 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 53.8% passing while Treyvon Hughes leads the Miners in rushing with 314 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Tre’Shon Wolf leads UTEP’s receiving group with 16 catches for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Devaughn Cooper, Jess Trussell and Alan Busey each have 100+ receiving yards this season. Defensively, Michael Lewis leads UTEP with 38 total tackles including a team-high 22 solo tackles while Justin Rogers has 30 total tackles. As a team, UTEP is averaging 298.2 yards of total offense and 17.8 points per game while allowing 423 yards of total defense and 33.2 points per game against this season.
The FIU Panthers will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 48-23 win over Charlotte in their last outing. James Morgan has thrown for 1,050 yards, 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 62.4% passing while Anthony Jones leads FIU in rushing with 410 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns. Napoleon Maxwell is 2nd with 341 rushing yards with 4 touchdowns and Kaylan Wiggins and D’Vonte Price each have 200+ rushing yards this season. Austin Maloney leads FIU in receiving with 327 receiving yards while Tony Gaiter IV has a team-high 21 catches for 284 yards and Shemar Thornton has 213 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns this season. Defensively, Jamal Gates leads FIU with 41 total tackles while Sage Lewis and Rishard Dames each have a pair of interceptions this season. As a team, FIU is averaging 416.7 yards of total offense and 30.2 points per game while allowing 377.3 yards of total defense and 24.2 points per game against this season.
UTEP is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games and 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 games overall while the under is 21-8 in their last 29 games in October. FIU is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a win and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in October while the over is 7-1 in their last 8 conference games.
Getting a boatload of points like this is kind of tempting as FIU isn’t a world beater, but the Panthers have looked good in their last couple of games at home and are simply the better team offensively here. UTEP has done their best to hold their own, but the Miners just have issues putting points on the board and even with three touchdowns, I just don’t feel comfortable backing the Miners. Give me FIU and lay the points in this one.
